With it's long history it is unsurprising that Rutlish has many notable alumni; war heroes, politicians, musicians, sportsmen and businessmen. Some have remained involved in the school over the years through the Rutlish Foundation, Old Rutlishians or the governing body.

John Rostill, English musician, bassist and composer. 2nd Lt George Cates VC He was a 24 years old second lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort's Own), British Army, during the First World War, and was awarded the VC for his actions on 8 March 1917 at Bouchavesnes, France. |
Malcolm Toft is an audio engineer, businessman and manufacturer of professional audio products. Toft was also co-owner of The Music Mill Studios in Newton Abbot, Devon. In 2009 he was awarded a visiting professorship by Leeds College of Music. He is also a member of the University of West London Student Advisory board. |

Memories from ex student Philip Cazaly who was at the school from 1941.
"On the first day I was grouped together with other new pupils in the main hall quite in awe of the cathedral like roof with is giant beams, coats of arms and the flags including Lord Nelsons own flag duly torn and holed by bullets...."
1943: "...the following morring I cycled to school and was horrified to find just a pile of rubble. The science and junior buildings had been hit by a Doodlebug and completely destroyed.

Archive Appeal
Ian Lambert, of the Old Rutlishians Association, has been developing the archive of records, information and memories of both the school and Old Ruts. He says:
I began this project many years ago in case our history was ‘lost’ in some disaster such as flood or fire or simply carelessness! The archive includes all the material which is to be found in the loft at the clubhouse plus from elsewhere BUT it is not complete. It includes School records, photos and reunions. Newspaper records of the World War exploits of O.R.s compiled by Incognitus are all to be found in there as well as team, school, staff and house photographs back into the early 20th Century.
But there are gaps which need plugging - MISSING (but by no means a comprehensive list!)
